Memorial page in honour of Vladimir E. Zakharov
    (1st of August 1939 — 20th of August 2023).
You spirit three times wise! you more than mighty man!
Of whom not night of time, nor blind illusion's ban,
Nor sullen envy could the senses seize and bind,
The senses which anew the course of earth did find;..
    Andreas Gryphius
fragment of "Concerning Nicolaus Copernicus' Picture"
from George C. Schoolfield,"The German Lyric of the Baroque in English Translation", p. 163, UNC, 1961.
    Dear Colleagues and Friends,

With great sadness we inform you that our beloved Colleague and Friend Vladimir Evgen'evich Zakharov passed away on August 20, 2023, peacefully while sleeping. It is a huge loss for all of us. Vladimir Zakharov is the creative giant who shaped the face of modern science of nonlinear phenomena ranging from plasma physics and nonlinear optics to the theory of integrable systems, ocean surface waves, and cosmology. He was a genius with unsurpassed intuition and creativity for several generations of mathematician, physicists and colleagues who worked with him.

If you would like to add some material (photos of or reminiscence about Vladimir Zakharov, etc.) to this web-site, please, send a request either to coordinator Pavel Lushnikov or to creator of the web-site Alexander Korotkevich.

Selected verses (with translation by Dr. Brendan Phibbs).

    Verses on Pure Mathematics
He did not waste his time in dives,
    Doctor Hardy, pure mathematician.
    On green lawns of Cambridge,
    He ambled, together with Ramanujan.
Or by himself, and thinking mostly of the numbers,
The primes and the perfect numbers.

The First World War, the Second,
    New epochs rose and fell,
But, the prime numbers are still prime,
And the perfect numbers, my friend,
Lost none of their divine perfection.

Some things are stable in this world!

    The Drunken Master
"The shed human's blood turns to
the wandering lights over the fields..."
    (Le-Tzi)
    The drunken master,
    The drunken master, bending legs,
Makes his way along the country road, talks to himself.
    The drunken master
Will lie soon on the road with a broken down head.

    The drunken master,
The lovely sun is setting over the fields,
    The drunken master doesn't fear
    The wife, robbers, the authorities,
The strongholds of clouds flame along the edges.

    Here the sun is setting,
While thousands miles east is already night,
But all the same it is Russia over there,
Where long ago padlocks hang on the stores,
    Women's coloured kerchiefs calm down,
Bells of kids voices faded from the river bank,
Only the night train whistles far away.

There already turned to the wandering lights
The shed human's blood, not here yet.
The drunken master waves the chisel, praises his carved cupboard,
His boots raise dust along the road.

My God, what a bloody, what a dusty sunset!
    1978

    The Morning
To my friends Lena Vool and Jasha Sinai
I stood under the oval Venetian window
Beneath the house with its girdle of grapevines
Salvador Dali naked, rode around on a horse.
    Yellow, huge, open dream-cars
Drove out of the years of the Great Gatsby
And the women in coquetting hats
Those tropical butterflies of the age of Jazz
Made signs to me, urging me to come down,
Join the world of violets of Parma
    Where women have conquered wrinkles
    Where is defined at peril,
A company of sun-tanned tennis enthusiasts
Killers of elephants, masters of stock-exchanges.

But Jesus Christ filled half the sky
    Hung on barely imagined nails
On the mountain filling opposite vision.
    And I remember
That it will be election tomorrow
And that it is so far unclear
Who will be in charge of this mountain tomorrow.

    And I remember
That I have seven-league boots in my possession
And it is better that I should go
    To the Himalayas
To inhale, happily, the rarified air of the highlands!
And God will see to it that I have no lack of oxygen.

    Good day, Mallory!
I am trading my seven-league boots for the worn gear of Shackleton!
    We will take Everest tomorrow,
Of course, inevitably, out icy graves await us,
Where we will be beautifully preserved
For the coming of commercial expeditions,

But all that’s for tomorrow; now
We have half an hour to look through the haze
    At Nepalese shrines
And terrifying bridges over mad rivers
As we sip sweet fat milk from yaks
Having no regrets about instantly flying by life.

    Franciscan
One scorching April day, a tall Franciscan
Came walking up a stony winding road
Which ran along resplendent flowering gardens
Up to the cloister by a southern seashore.
"Who's there?" the Guard asked from behind the portal.
"A brother in the Lord", said the Franciscan.
"Who are you after?"— "Brother Gabriele."
"He's busy: has to paint the Resurrection."
The stranger plucked a rosebud from the trellis
And flung it over with exasperation,
And back he went. While in the yard the rosebud
Over the marble scattered in black ashes.
